Venture capitalists distinguish between founders who are "mercenaries" or "missionaries." Mercenaries have a killer approach—a technology or expertise—and don't care what problem they solve with it. Missionaries have fallen in love with a problem worth solving, and will spend their lives doing what they need to solve it.
We are mercenaries (well, management consultants). We advise CEOs and C-Suites on, frankly, how to make more money. We segment customers, engineer processes, organize teams, set enterprise strategy, advise executives, etc., from the tech sector, to financial services, to healthcare, and more.
But we took one missionary contract that changed everything for us. A former client called us and said that his friend—a director at a national philanthropic foundation (a missionary organization, if there ever were one)—needed a problem solved in 10 weeks, and so needed mercenaries to solve it fast, no matter what. What began as 10 weeks turned into 6 years of advising over $100M of grantmaking to ensure that the poorest Americans have a path out of poverty.
Over that time, we fell in love with that problem. Today, our mission is to use our discerning, data-driven, deliberate mercenary DNA to solve it:
